Beeswax Candles vs Paraffin
We explain why beeswax candles are so superior to paraffin candles.

Beeswax Candles vs Paraffin

What Is Bees Wax

beeswax

Beeswax is a renewable all natural product with no additives or fillers. It's non-toxic properties make it perfect for a clean burning and bright fuel source as a beeswax candle. Unlike most of the manufactured paraffin candles, beeswax is hypo-allergenic, great for people with allergies or other sensitivities and those of us who want a safe, clean burning candle in our homes.

What Is Paraffin Wax

paraffin wax

Paraffin Wax is a finite wax created as a byproduct of petroleum sludge. It is highly refined and treated with carcinogenic chemicals to force it into something that passes as a usable product. After processing it still contains up to 11 toxic compounds and chemicals, benzene and toluene to name a few (as noted by the State of California). It isn't a clean or bright burning fuel source. It is not hypo-allergenic and not great for people with allergies, asthma, or other chemical sensitivities.

Beeswax is non-toxic.

Beeswax candles contain none of the harmful chemicals sometimes found in paraffin candles. Paraffin wax contains up to 11 toxic compounds and chemicals, benzene and toluene to name a few.

Beeswax is long burning.

Beeswax candles naturally burn significantly longer than paraffin candles, ranging from two to five times as long. Paraffin wax burns quickly. Even with the addition of other chemicals to increase the burn times, it's not as efficient as beeswax.

Beeswax is clean burning.

Beeswax candles burn very clean when trimmed properly, producing hardly any soot. Paraffin wax produces a lot of soot and is compared to the exhaust of a diesel engine. This soot also stains and covers the walls in your home, leaving streaks of black residue to clean.

Beeswax is a better value.

Contrary to popular belief beeswax candles are often similar or even cheaper in cost than paraffin candles. Paraffin candles may initially seem cheaper, but that misrepresentation of savings dissolves when comparing their significantly shorter burn times to the burn times of beeswax candles.

Beeswax is naturally dripless.

Our beeswax taper candles are naturally dripless in normal draft free conditions. Paraffin candles are naturally prone to dripping. Additional chemicals can be added to paraffin to force them be dripless.

Beeswax burns brightly.

The light emitted by a beeswax candle is much stronger and brighter than that of any other candle. Since paraffin wax has a lower melting point, it has a weaker, less brilliant flame than a beeswax candle.

Beeswax is renewable.

Beeswax is a renewable resource! Paraffin wax is made from our finite supply of fossil fuels. It does nothing to help lessen the stranglehold oil (foreign or domestic) has on us.

Beeswax is safe for allergies.

Beeswax candles can be burned around those with allergies, asthma, or those who are sensitive to chemicals. Paraffin wax can make no such claim. Outside of the diesel exhaust-like smoke it creates, often times the perfumes and artificial scents in the candles are very troublesome too.

Beeswax emits negative ions.

It's been debated, but most studies show that beeswax is the only candle that emits negative ions while burning. Negative ions help clean the air, similar to how a rain storm helps clean the air outside. Try burning a beeswax candle to help you feel calmer throughout the day. Paraffin candles do not emit negative ions.

Beeswax does not expire.

In fact beeswax obtains more beauty with age! A harmless white film develops naturally over the beeswax as time passes. Many find this natural white etching to be a very desirable feature. Beeswax has been found in the pyramids virtually unchanged after thousands of years. Paraffin wax does not bloom.

Beeswax is not oil based.

Cleanup is much easier for accidental spills of beeswax. Paraffin is oil based and can be difficult or impossible to remove.

reasons to avoid paraffin candles

Reasons To Avoid Paraffin

  • Paraffin wax has short burn times.
  • Paraffin wax smoke contains toxins.
  • Paraffin is not a renewable resource.
  • Paraffin wax often has additional toxic chemicals in it.
  • Paraffin candles sometimes contain lead wicks.
